Enrique Dos Santos and We Got A Beef!

Preamble

Bringing this over from the Discord.

Enrique Dos Santos Text:

React: After a wanted dude who is not at home accepts a callout from Enrique, other dudes cannot join the mark’s posse until after posses are formed.

We Got A Beef! Text:

React: After an unbooted dude accepts a callout, but before posses are formed, swap the location of either the mark or leader with a dude at an adjacent location controlled by the same player. The chosen dude replaces the original mark or leader in the shootout.

In the Discord, there seemed to be agreement that, if Enrique calls out a wanted dude, both of these reacts trigger on the same window, and, by the rules compendium React Priorities section, seem to both fall into the same bucket (Other Reacts, as, even though beef is a replacement effect, it is not an “instead” effect). So the order is dealer’s choice.

Where it’s still unclear to me is what happens on each ordering.

Enrique First, Beef Second

In this case, we trigger Enrique, who puts in place the following effect:

other dudes cannot join the mark’s posse until after posses are formed.

Then we trigger Beef, which does the following:

swap the location of the mark with a dude at an adjacent location controlled by the same player. The chosen dude replaces the original mark in the shootout.

This is all happening before posse formation, so I would imagine there’s no conflict with Enrique’s text here (but am not certain, as the mark is considered an intrinsic part of the called-out posse). However, with the mark being replaced, is Enrique’s effect null and void (as the mark who he was referencing is no longer the mark), or does his effect transfer cleanly to the new mark?

Beef First, Enrique Second

After Enrique calls out the wanted dude, Beef introduces the following effect:

swap the location of the mark with a dude at an adjacent location controlled by the same player. The chosen dude replaces the original mark in the shootout.

The dude who has been swapped out is now no longer the mark, but is still, nonetheless, a wanted dude who accepted a callout. Can Enrique still use his ability at this point?

Great question!

RT is in the process of defining Swap for purposes of Yang Li, Jarrett Blake, and We Got Beef to be more clear. This is a replacement effect. For purposes of bounty, the dude does join the posse.

  1. If Enrique triggers first, then We Got Beef, the Dude swapping in becomes the Mark for all intents and purposes and therefore no other Dudes can join the posse.

  2. If We Got Beef triggers first, then Enrique’s reaction can only be applied to the new Mark; therefore, the new Mark must be Wanted in this case.
