Mother Bears rage and Nature Spirit

I suspect this is another case of the card intent being clear but the wording not quite reflecting the intent but I’m going to ask the question anyway.

Mother Bear’s Rage
Spell • Cost 1
Spirit • Totem
Noon Spirit 5, Boot: A 2-stud Nature Spirit comes into play at this location or an adjacent deed and calls out a dude there.

Nature Spirit
Dude • Stud 2 • Influence 0 • Cost 0 • Upkeep 0
Token
Cannot be included in decks.
Remove this token from the game after this shootout.

What happens to the nature spirit if the callout is refused, either by rules effect or card effect? If no shootout is initated then there is no trigger for the nature spirirt to be removed.

Section 5.3.2 of the rule book states:
"If a dude accepts a call out, a shootout starts at their location, and both sides can form posses. "

this would imply that a shootout only begins after a call out has been accepted.

Excellent question! You are correct on the intent and when a shootout begins. Rules Team is addressing the issue in updating the rules/compendium regarding this card. Unlike Judge XP, where it specifies the token leaves at the end of the job (solving the question of what would happen with no shootout), there is no similar entry on Rage regarding what happens if there is no shootout. The token leaves play is the result intended and the ruling.
