If i refuse to pay 3 to keep my guy with Serendipitous Arrival , can Warren Graves use his ability to negate the discard and keep the dude in play ? (as the dude is discarded by Serendipitous effect, and serendipitous is a shootout ability )

The way I’d read that interaction is that the shootout play itself is to bring the dude in. Because the action isn’t an ace/discard action of itself, rather, a cost, Graves’ ability wouldn’t trigger.
I could well be wrong on this of course - @scottw, what say you?

Costs, if any, are in the first sentence of a card.
Serendipitous Arrivals cost is Play a dude from your hand into your posse, reducing their cost by 5.
The latter sentence, When the shootout ends, pay 3 ghost rock or discard that dude. can be prevented by Warren Graves, as it comes from a Shootout play (React: When a shootout play aces, discards, or sends another of your dudes home booted, send them home booted instead. Warren joins the posse (moving if necessary).) and is not a cost.
