Dead Man's Hand: GenCon 2018 Storyline Event

I wanted to take some time to explain the GenCon storyline event we have planned for August 3rd, 2018, at 10am. While we discuss a little bit about it in the main GenCon thread (GenCon 2018 Doomtown: Reloaded Event Guide - #18 by Lapp) here’s an update specifically about this event.

Last year I went to scout out Deadwood, South Dakota, and in visiting the grave sites of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, I thought about the Deadlands history with these characters. Wild Bill was shot from behind by Jack McCall during a game of poker at the No. 10 Saloon on August 2, 1876, while holding what became known as the Dead Man’s Hand. In Deadlands, Wild Bill returned harrowed to hunt down Jack McCall and the jurors that acquitted him in this alternate timeline. In visiting the current day site of the No. 10 Saloon, I noticed they feature the fifth card of the Dead Man’s Hand as the 9 of Diamonds. As it turns out, there’s a disputed history over the fifth card, some saying there isn’t one and that Hickok was in the process of drawing it. There’s also a completely different array of 5 cards, still Aces and Eights with blood on it at the Deadwood Museum, with a claim that this was the actual Dead Man’s Hand.

Thinking of fun ways to play Doomtown in alternate formats, Pine Box Entertainment would like to present the Dead Man’s Hand event for this GenCon. It’s regular Doomtown, but with a twist on deck construction and the Dead Man’s Hand Rank 11 shootout hand. In addition, this event will be represented in an upcoming fiction, as we follow the tale of Coot Jenkins, known as ‘The Prospector,’ as he uncovers a Harrowed in his travels; this Harrowed will be a character from Doomtown, as chosen by the event winner (top of swiss!). There will be additional top of faction prizes and plenty of promos for event attendees provided in each round of play!

All players will bring a regular Doomtown deck, but no characters killed in the AEG era Doomtown Storyline will be legal, and there will be a twist on the legality of the Dead Man’s Hand. We’re keeping with the two black Aces and two black Eights, but the following cards will be legal in addition to the Jack of Diamonds to make up a Dead Man’s Hand:

Queen of Diamonds: An alternately claimed kicker to the Jack of Diamonds
Five of Diamonds: As featured in Las Vegas myth

Note that Erik Samson is not banned, as his death was left ambiguous. The Flying Popescus are not banned, but lose their trait, as Etilka Popescu (of The Flying Popescus) was blasted by Wendy Cheng’s shotgun.

In addition, there will be a special guest host to tell this narrative, and a special guest player. Each round, the opponent of the guest player will choose a Doomtown card that will be featured in this fiction.

We hope players will view this more as a social gathering of playing Doomtown than a competitive tournament  This event will be followed by the Doomtown Classic ‘Double Barrel’ event. Be sure to check out our Greenhorn Event on Thursday, Social events on Wednesday, and the North American Championship on Saturday, where we’ll badge a new Marshal who will get to design an upcoming Doomtown card!

Should Quaterman still be on the list?

Given our latest fiction, good question! Checking with story team now for an update.

DMH decks without Steven Wiles will be a fun challenge. Horace Manse sorta does the same job, but he has 0 influence and isn’t a stud, so he’s nowhere near as useful.

Oddly I was going to ask for this list anyway. Seems like 4 is a lucky dude value for the time being…

I missed this one from my list.

Is there a fiction/favlour text reference so I can correct it please?

Per story team:
-Quaterman will stay banned as we await it’s new version: bigger, stronger, scarier version
-Sanford killed Swinford in Frontier Justice; Sanford is still above ground in the fiction.

Thanks for clearing things up Lapp. Perhaps we’ll see some lawman bring Sanford to justice eventually, or maybe Sanford will add to his grim badge collection?

What’s the Twist?

The 4 other cards that can be used to replace the Jack of Diamonds:

A few quick questions.
Can you use all 5 options for DMH in the same deck?
In regards to picking a Harrowed.
Are we picking from this list of slain characters, or can we pick a living character?
Are we limited on our choice via the faction we play in the event?

  1. Yes, all 5 options for the 5th card in the Dead Mans Hand is legal.
  2. It is a slain character
  3. Not limited to faction played; story team will be on site to approve the choice :cowboy_hat_face:

How badly was Arvid’s head crushed?

By at least a 5 stud because of Smiling Thom. We know Bobo wasn’t unprepared or had sun in his eyes, and struck first meaning Arvid wasn’t Faster on the draw. I’d even venture to guess it was a point blank blow.

Is Mongwau the Mighty dead? A familiar profile is lurking in the back of the art of The Blighted, which confirmed Tommy’s residence in Boot Hill.

Edit: Also, what about all the corpses from the UK event?
