No, the promo cards were from the Sheriff kit .
EDIT: the “story prize” was the opportunity to kill (or save) dudes off the posted list - It is a community prize.
It was not a ‘dude on a card’ event. The winner (and top qualifier) by winning 13 matches (note the final was 3 games, so there were 15 games won by the winner) or at least 8 matches had more ‘say’ in the votes. Also, IIRC, at least the final match (and maybe the rest of the finals) had 3 votes (I was judging, taking off my Story hat for a bit).
Cool! Thanks for the clarification. Wasn’t really trying to imply ‘that’s it?’ as much as just seeking if there was anything specific the winner got, as the announcement didn’t make it very clear.

Has it been said/determined if there are going to be any in-game effects from these “deaths”? Are these dudes going to be banned from competitive play, or is this just a storyline only thing?
Just story. We’ve seen both mayoral candidates killed dead as of Election Day Slaughter and there have been no mechanical repercussions.
It mostly just means that, short of Harrowing or some other means of revival or story trick (like they secretly survived) these dudes are not getting an Experienced version.
I’m glad the prizes are so narrow, one of the worst things L5R had was how players perverted the story and even the game with their wacky choices…

Also, the dearly departed will no longer appear as living characters in the storyline fictions.
Or just their dead boring choices. “Let’s corrupt the lion! Because samurai redemption stories are cool!” Over and over and over. “Lets corrupt the phoenix!”
Honestly, I think the story started really downhill at Lotus, I believe Dark Lotus would have been a better and more interesting story, instead they had to cut it short and retool.
Not to say that I don’t like big, story moving prizes. There are some cool ideas you can do, but I think they’re better relegated to big tournaments like Gen Con.
I also liked the gigantic race to the thrones thing, just to have a Dragon Clan personality as an empty shell of an empress who literally did not speak. Glad that we Scorpions took the temptation and got the reincarnated Bayushi Shoju instead. Oh wait…
ugh. Yeah. I’m honestly sick of fighting over the imperial throne. And I hated the justification for ousting the Toturi dynasty after so many years of fighting over which stupid kid got it (which was also decided in the worst way).
Oh and don’t forget the Destroyer War, which we won, except no one bothered to tell the players that wherever they stopped was where a new Pit would be opened. Oh and Daigotsu ascended to godhood because Story team <3 <3 <3 him.
Yeah. Been a lot of awful major story decisions and set ups in the last few years for the game.
Anyway, off topic. I think at least with Doomtown it’s a little easier since the town and factions themselves are relatively small, it’s harder to do big storyline events that would change the whole Deadlands setting like L5R regularly does with the Empire.
